Water. It is the staple of
life for all of mankind, and yet we have an innate fear
of it. For millions of people drowning is a gripping and
terrifying way to die which prevents them from ever stepping
foot in water. Man, quite simply, was not built to exist
underwater. And yet there is a brave collection of individuals
who possess skills which can best be called- "aquatic."
They are the Freedivers. This rare breed of man and woman
have slowly conditioned their bodies to do what it not
meant to do- exist underwater for long periods of time
without breathing apparatus. This unique ability has given
rise to several types of freediving, including breathold
spearfishing, and has encouraged people to depths of 181
meters!
Panthera cameraman Graeme Duane is a freediver himself
and will be our guide in this exciting look at this burgeoning
sport.
