SOUTH AFRICA - A young black rhino bull and cow have been successfully relocated by air from the Kruger National Park, South Africa, to the Liwonde National Park in Malawi.

The objective of this joint project between the South African National Parks (SANP) and the North West Parks and Tourism Board (NWPTB) ) is to establish satellite populations of this endangered species in Southern Africa and to facilitate the development of the ecotourism industry in Southern African developing countries.

The young bull named Chimpange (meaning pioneer in Malawian) is seven years old and the cow, Chimwemwe (meaning gift), is eight. Chimwemwe is four months pregnant and is expected to calf in eleven months.

The pair of rhino will be monitored in a holding boma for one week to adapt to the climate and vegetation of their new home before being released into the park.

Since 1993 four rhinoceros have been relocated to Liwonde National Park. They have adapted well and produced two calves.

Sponsors, without whom this project would not have been possible, include: the SANP and NWPTB for donating the animals; J&B Circle of Friends, Panthera Productions, the Malawi-SA Wildlife Project & BP South Africa for funding the sanctuary and the relocation which was provided at discount rate by Sky Relief.
