| On the edge of the Kalahari
Desert in the remote wilderness of northern
Botswana, the last rains of the season
have fallen. For nine long months the
animals of this beautiful but harsh
land will face a battle to survive while
supplies of water dry up, and sources
of food dwindle to nothing. Many animal
species develop remarkable behavioral
adaptations to make it through the season,
and one of the most resourceful is the
impala. Running the gauntlet of predators,
competition and long searing months
of dryness, only the strongest of these
fleet-footed antelope make it through
the test. It is an easy time for the
predators, as cheetah, hyena and lions
prey on the weakening herds. Unusual
behaviors begin to emerge and even the
complicated social system of the elephant
begins to break down with disastrous
results. |
